They burned the buildings. They destroyed the businesses. They shattered lives. But they could not erase the legacy.
In the early 1900s, the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Oklahoma, stood as one of the most prosperous Black communities in America. Known as Black Wall Street, Greenwood was home to Black-owned businesses, banks, theaters, restaurants, churches, schools, and families who built opportunity and generational wealth despite the barriers of segregation.
Then came May 31 and June 1, 1921.
A white mob attacked Greenwood in what became known as the Tulsa Race Massacre. Homes and businesses were looted and burned. Approximately 35 city blocks were devastated. Hundreds of Black residents were killed or injured, and thousands were left homeless or displaced.
Generations of hard work, wealth, and dreams were attacked in a matter of hours.
But Greenwood's story did not end in the ashes.
Survivors returned. Families rebuilt. The community refused to surrender its place in history.
